The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP, is part of a federal nutrition program that helps low-income households purchase nutritious food. Individuals must apply for the program and provide all the required documentation.
The amount of benefit provided is based on income, resources and the number of individuals in the household. SNAP benefits are issued on an Delaware Food First card each month, which is an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card. This EBT card can be used just like a debit card at authorized grocery stores.
Individuals can use SNAP befits to purchase eligible food items online at participating Aldi, ShopRite, and Walmart stores and at Amazon.
SNAP benefits CAN be used to purchase:
Fruits and vegetables
Meat, poultry, and fish
Dairy products
Breads and cereals
Other foods such as snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages
Vegetable, fruit, and herb seeds and plants
SNAP benefits CANNOT be used to purchase:
Hot or prepared foods
Non-food items
Alcoholic beverages
Vitamins, medicines, and supplements
Fees for service, delivery, shipping, or membership
