Scott County DHS Details

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP, is part of a federal nutrition program that helps qualifying low-income households purchase nutritious food. This program is designed to increase their nutritional level so that they can stay healthy.

Individuals must apply for the program and provide all the required documentation. In order to qualify, applicants must meet certain financial criteria(income, assets) and non-financial (state residency, citizenship/alien status, work registration, and other) requirements.

After the application is filed, the individual will be interviewed by a case worker and should be prepared to answer questions related to the household situation. Once it is determined that the applicant is eligible for SNAP benefits, an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) Card will be sent to the individual via mail.

The amount of benefit provided is based on income, resources and the number of individuals in the household. SNAP benefits are issued monthly on the Electronic Benefit Transfer card. This card can be used just like a debit card at authorized grocery stores and food retailers.

Basic Eligibility:
  • Meet income guidelines
  • Be a citizen or legal immigrant
  • All children who are born in the United States can apply even if their parents are not citizens

SNAP benefits can be used to purchase:
  • Breads and cereals
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Meats, fish and poultry
  • Dairy products
  • Seeds and plants which produce food for the household to eat.

SNAP benefits cannot be used to purchase:
  • Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes or tobacco
  • Any nonfood items, such as: pet foods, soaps, paper products, household supplies
  • Vitamins and medicines
  • Food that will be eaten in the store
  • Hot foods

A worker from Scott County contacted me for an interview for renewing my annual Snap. on SATURDAY December 11th, 2021. I thought it was rather odd DHS would call on a Saturday. She said they are trying to catch up is why she was calling on a Saturday. Also I thought it was odd that no one had mailed me a letter for an appt. time date etc prior to the phone interview, and not from my own county either, yet her number had the same area code as mine that showed up on my phone. Yet her area code would or should had been different coming from Scott county. She knew all my information without me telling her first. So I guess it was legit. I hope it was, I didn't give her any personal info. Only answered her questions about how much rent I pay and if who lives at my address. I wish DHS would make sure they get a scheduled appointment lined up first via mail, as they always use to, that way people would know it is a legit interview when a DHS person calls. Because there are way too many phone scams that go on these days.
