Department of Social Services - Congress Heights Details

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP, is part of a federal nutrition program that helps low-income individuals purchase nutritious food. Individuals must apply for the program and provide all the required documentation.

The amount of benefit provided is based on income, resources and the number of individuals in the household. SNAP benefits are issued on an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card, which can be used just like a debit card at authorized grocery stores. Individuals can use SNAP befits to purchase eligible food items online at Amazon and Aldi via Instacart.


SNAP benefits CAN be used to purchase:
Fruits and vegetables
Meat, poultry, and fish
Dairy products
Breads and cereals
Other foods such as snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages
Seeds and plants, which produce food for the household to eat


SNAP benefits CANNOT be used to purchase:
Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes, or tobacco
Vitamins, medicines, and supplements. If an item has a Supplement Facts label, it is considered a supplement and is not eligible for SNAP purchase.
Live animals (except shellfish, fish removed from the water, and animals slaughtered prior to pick-up from the store).
Prepared foods fit for immediate consumption
Hot foods
Any nonfood items such as:
    - Pet foods, 
    - Cleaning supplies, paper products, and other household supplies
    - Hygiene items, cosmetics
